WiiHD is your one-stop shop for hardcore gaming on the Wii.
Hardcore gamers frequently belittle the Wii for its low-power CPU, small storage space and gimicky casual games. Nintendo didn't keep their promise to focus on both hardcore AND casual games, but they did design a control system that is truly next-gen. Rumors of similar controls for PS3 and the 360 tell that tale. Sure, you can accurately control a 3D game with dual analog. You can also communicate in binary, but why would you want to? The Wii Remote rivals the PC keyboard and mouse as a control mechanism for 3D worlds, and it leaves dual-analog as a relic of the past. It can change the way games are played. Hardcore gaming isn't just about distracting ADD patients with shiny gfx, it's about delivering a whole new way of playing.
The Wii's FPS controls have finally been perfected with the release of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. In November of 2007, Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 brought the first taste of online FPS to the system, and the most customizable controls we've seen so far. Nintendo's focus may be elsewhere, but if you buy, the games will come. The most exciting game on the menu now is The Conduit, a new original IP from High Voltage that promises the whole package for the first time. The Wii has overtaken the xbox 360's 1 year lead and has the largest install base of any console. Talk of most of them being casual gamers is a misnomer—the new casual gamers mostly live in the same household as a hardcore gamers. If developers will finally stop phoning in Wii development and give us complete games, they'll see incredible returns.
This site will follow, document, review, compare and contrast the Wii's hardcore games with your help. There's good news on the horizon. Be a part of it at WiiHD. And leave your casual games at the door.
WiiHD is a huge fan of online gaming, but not just any online gaming. Core gaming in genres like racing, fighting, and shooters. So now we want to do our part to help the core Clan community on Wii make themselves known and increase their membership. We will begin listing notable clans that actively engage in clan wars in games like Medal of Honor: Heroes 2. We will however keep the gates, so not just any clan listing will be accepted. A clan needs to demonstrate viability to be listed
WiiHD is now unveiling a gallery of user created videos from Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 (MoHH2), currently the best FPS on Wii, and the only one with online multiplayer. We'll be doing this for a number of similar games as they come out. If you want your video included, just hit the link above and use the submission form.
Do you like free games and consoles? So do we. That's why WiiHD is opening up our Contest SuperSite (Beta) to you. We've painstakingly gathered gaming related contests from around the blogosphere, and put them all in one place for your convenience. We'll be tweaking the site over the next week or so, and increasing the number of contests available. So keep your eyes peeled for more goodies. Permalink

Pandemic's Mercenaries 2 is bringing your soldier-for-hire fix to the 360, PS3 and even the PS2, but not Wii. At least, not for now. In an interview with Videogamer.com, Corey Lewis from Pandemic said that the Wii was a "tough fit" for the game, and that the Pandemic team only wanted to do Wii titles that were made for Wii, rather than fast and dirty ports.
We applaud their interest in doing games right, but we disagree that the Wii couldn't do right by Mercs 2. Presumably "tough fit" is a reference to the Wii's audience, presumed to be Ubisoftz loving fluff balls. The same audience that bought RE4 and REUC in droves, and even drove the lackluster Red Steel to near a million copies. Listen developers, if you build it, we will come. We're just sitting on our fraking hands waiting for you to build it already. Hit the break for Mercs 2 media so you can decide how bad to feel about missing out on the game. Enterprising Neogafers have uncovered what appears to be early contenders for boxart for the 360 version of COD5. We're not thrilled with most of them, but the graveyard one doesn't look too bad. Hit the break for all the contenders.
In other weekend COD5 news, Destructoid has quotes (via CVG) about Treyarch wanting to "redefine" the WWII shooter genre. I'm not holding my breath, but the genre could use some redefinition.

Update: Kotaku has a source on the topic that claims the new motion controller(s) will be modules that will be worn, for instance on your hands and feet, but never actually connect to each other. So not a split up dual-shock or anything. We'll see.
Sony is looking to open get their Wii on by splitting their controller into something a little more Wiimote like, according to gamesindustry.biz. It's unclear exactly how such a device would look or function, but expect an accelerometer in each like the Nunchuck and Wiimote combination. WiiHD would love to see an IR camera as well, something we consider to be the defining triumph of the Wii Remote. If a Sony device like that were heavily supported it could lead to more and better cross platform games between Sony and Wii. But since this new scheme likely wouldn't show up in the box with the system, it isn't likely to be heavily supported. Alternate controllers are alternate controllers. Call us when you ship it with the system Sony. Source| Via Joystiq | Permalink

Update: My visual guide has been updated. At first I thought I had two different angles on the shotgun, and labeled them accordingly, but upon further inspecting, one gun has the letters "AK6" on the side, where the shotgun does not, and several other details make it clear it isn't the same gun. The labeling has been changed.
JTRamboman, good friend of WiiHD and highly respected member of Wii Troopers, has spent away some his valuable youth gleaning important details on The Conduit's weapons cache, presumably from IGN's Hi-Def trailer and some screens. He's got names, he's got capacities, and he's got descriptions. He even gleaned some gameplay details. In other words, he's got ALL our numbers.
While we were all drooling over the pretty colors and fast pace and taking embarrassing amounts of great pleasure in the explosions and blood, JTR was being an enormous geek and actually writing stuff down looking for the devil in the details. Hit the break to see them and the trailer, then head over to gamefaqs to thank him for being a geek.

Rainbow Studios calls the game an action thriller, but at WiiHD, we prefer to classify it under the lesser known arachnid horror category. You have your pick of two heroes to play as. Behind door number one, your friendly neighborhood tarantula, is said to like quiet introspection and Harry Potter novels. Behind the other door is the affably outgoing scorpion, reported to enjoy bold moves and Battlestar Galactica. Your mission? To survive a trek a across a dangerous and enemy-infested desert. It's dark, brooding, and even cinematic as there is a separate human drama taking place outside your immediate battleground.
Samit Sarkar over at Destructoid got a little demo time with Deadly Creatures last week, and was kind enough to document his impressions for us today. Hit the break for quotes (and bonus material from IGN's April hands-on), screens, and two videos. Hit the source link for the all of Destructoid's impressions. Source | Permalink
In his column titled "Artful High Definition Games," Wayne Santos examines games as an emerging art form. There's one platform unexpectedly covered in this HD column—it's the only 7th generation console that doesn't support High Definition (720p and higher) output, and that frequently rejects photorealism in favor of heavily stylized graphics. You've already guessed what platform that is? My aren't you clever.
Okami on Wii makes an appearance in his list of artful high definition games, and receives high praise for its appearance, gameplay, and innovation. It may not have been born on Wii, but it's more at home here than virtually any other title, and WiiHD loves it for coming home. Catch some more quotes after the break, or do yourself a favor and read the whole thing.
Even though the game is on the Wii and not actually an HD game, its rewarding gameplay, gorgeous art design, and more innocent themes make it a game well worth owning….
Pryoblazer is a futuristic combat racer featuring vehicles called, predictably, Blazers. They're anti-grav ships and they come in an as-yet unnumbered variety, but they do improve as the game goes on, and upgrades are present during the races. They look pretty sweet and they are armed to the teeth. Each blazer gets one of 10 primary weapons and one of 10 different types of mines for a secondary weapon.
The environments sound exotic, the screens and video seem to portray a breakneck pace, but the only two consoles listed are Wii and PSP. So is Wii more likely to get a PC port, or a PSP port? History tells the ugly tale. Still, WiiHD keeps an open mind and looks forward to some futuristic antigrav combat action.
The game is supposed to have already come out for PC, but the date for the Wii and PSP versions are unknown. Hit the trailer and some screens after the break. WiiHD assumes this media is from the PC version, so caveat emptor. Press Release | Permalink
